Mehrkanaltechnik: Die analoge und digitale Mehrkanaltontechnik

Bei der Mehrkanaltechnik liegen im Gegensatz zu anderen Techniken, die mit zwei Lautsprechern auskommen, mindestens vier getrennte Kanäle vor. Unterschieden wird dabei zwischen der analogen und digitalen Mehrkanaltontechnik. Daher sind für optimale gute Soundeffekte beim Abspielen mindestens fünf Lautsprecher erforderlich. So ist der Unterschied gegenüber dem Stereoton nicht nur im Ton, sondern auch im optischen Bereich sichtbar.
Liegt der analoge Mehrkanal vor, dann handelt es sich bei der Mehrkanaltechnik um die Kanäle Links, Rechts, Center und Rear. Zwei Rearboxen bilden in diesem Fall den Effektkanal. Damit wird im Hinblick auf den Klang die Raumkulisse noch realistischer.
Analoger Surround hatte bereits hochwertige Klangerlebnisse gewährt. Doch noch besser wurden die Ergebnisse mit dem digitalen Surround. Dolby Digital und DTS wurden für den Bereich des digitalen Mehrkanals geschaffen. Dafür wird die entsprechende Software mitgeliefert. Außerdem liegen beim digitalen Mehrkanalton sogar mindestens sechs getrennte Kanäle vor. Zu den verwendeten Systemen gehören hier die 5.1-Formate, wobei fünf Fullrangekanäle sowie ein Tieftonkanal gegeben sind. Ein weiterer Kanal für den Centerbereich wurde beim 6.1 Kanalsystem eingearbeitet.
